UKHRUL| Sep 9: Acute shortage of cash had hit Ukhrul UBI bank with the cash remittance from the bank having been put on halt since June 2019.

Branch Manager, Ranabir Ngangom informed the IFP that the scheduled cash remittance for Ukhrul UBI Bank was cancelled on July 7 while also mentioning that they received the cancellation information through telephonic conversation from RBI Officials based in Guwahati. Since then there has been no intimation for the next schedule of cash remittance, he said.

“Due to cash shortage, the bank is in a difficult situation. We are unable to pay or transact any amount for our bank customers. We are indeed facing serious problem in dealing with the customers and are clueless on what we could do,” Ranbir lamented.

In the meantime, the public has become enraged with all the ATMs in Ukhrul time remaining cashless and useless for transactions; although in some fortunate cases, customers could withdraw an amount of Rs.5000 – Rs.1000 but that is only when the clients have deposited cash in the bank.

Today, many customers turn up to withdraw money but they have to leave empty handed as there were no cash, which led to a commotion from the customers after having stood the whole day on queue and later being informed that there was no cash. Bank officials were compelled to put up a notice saying “No Cash Inconvenience Regretted” after the commotion.

A retired assistant teacher from Kachai Phungthar Village, K Shangrem expressed his disappointed after waiting in a queue the whole day long and retuning back without any cash. Several other aged customers also expressed their disappointment since they were feeble and have come from far flung villages just to withdraw a meagre amount of money which constituted their pensions’ salaries.

It may be recalled here that this the first time that the banks in Ukhrul have face shortage of cash; in fact it has become a frequent occurrence since the banks have to rely on chopper services for delivery of money. And the people of Ukhrul have been demanding alternative means of transport via roadways and others.
