Two CRPF personnel of 87 Bn received injuries in a blast that occurred at Lilashing Khongnangkhong, in front of Thangmeiband Improvement Club (TIC), near Assembly western gate, Imphal West.
Police sources said, the blast was caused by a ‘Chinese hand grenade’. The injured have been identified as one GC Raba, 40, residence of Assam and another Yadav Munna, 37, residence of West Bengal. They have been admitted at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, (RIMS) Lamphel, Imphal West.
The incident occurred following the finding of a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Phouwabi, Lamlai near Flora Children Park on Wednesday.
It is suspected that the grenade was hurled towards the personnel who were being stationed near the TIC. Police sources said, the main station of the injured CRPF personnel is in Jiribam and they were deployed in Imphal, in connection with the prevailing situation of the State. The personnel were being posted as daily routine at the blast site.
Imphal Police rushed to the site for spot inquiry and during the course of action, one grenade lever was recovered from the front of TIC. Police reported that the grenade is suspected to be a Chinese-made hand grenade.
Hospital authority said, the two personnel received minor injuries at shoulder and shin. They were discharged after giving first aid.
A local from the surrounding area reported that the blast did not create a loud sound. They found out that a bomb explosion had taken place only after coming out from their residences.
“The government should immediately withdraw the personnel being stationed at the area. People are in panicky situation after the blast as civilians could have been injured as well. To avoid such incidents from happening in the future again, CRPF personnel must not be stationed at such congested public places,” he said.
