IMPHAL | Oct 5: The upcoming 3rd edition of state level Shirui Lily Festival, which is scheduled to be held from October 16 to 19, will have internationally acclaimed rock bands such as Nazareth and Extreme as a special attraction.
Taking to the media this evening at the Shirui Hall, Hotel Imphal, Alfred S Kanngam Arthur, MLA of Ukhrul AC, who also heads the entertainment committee of the festival informed that Scottish rock band Nazareth will be headlining Shirock on the inaugural day. While American rock band Extreme will perform on the closing day.
He further promised good quality sound system for Shirock, as tourists in earlier edition of the festival have had complained against poor sound quality, which upset the musical output. He intimated that sound system for Shirock will be procured from places like Hyderabad, Ahmadabad and Bengaluru and added that sound technicians will be called in from Malaysia and most probably from America as well, as demanded by the bands.
The MLA went on to inform that registrations with district administrations for homestay as well as Shirock goers have been made mandatory in this year’s edition. Whereas online registration is underway, offline registration is likely to be made available after October 10, he said.
He also announced that band competitions and Shirock Voice competition to promote talented and deserving youths will also be main highlights of the musical extravaganza.
While noting that promoting tourism as targeted by the festival is not confined to only the four day of the festival but throughout the year, Alfred sought cooperation from the people and to extend their support for successful hosting of the festival.
State tourism director, W. Ibohal, who was also present during the interaction said this year’s edition of the festival will be a plastic free festival. The recent meeting of the organising committee of the festival resolved to prohibit single use plastic in the festival venues as directed by the chief minister, he said.
Ibohal continued that bamboo utensils, banana leaves, etc. and eco-friendly products will replace single-use plastic products during the festival. Like past years, the festival aim at promoting tourism in the State, and it will be held in three main venues of Ukhrul district, namely Shirui village, TNL ground and Bakshi ground, he added.
While noting that the festival will be a major means of livelihood to the people of the state, Ukhrul in particular, in terms of the incoming of tourists, Ibohal maintained that the festival will also promote local cuisines, cultures of the land, etc.
He further stated that the festival will also bring more awareness about the uniqueness of Shirui Lily, which cannot be tgrown elsewhere in the world except in the Kashong (Shirui) Hill. This will greatly help in conserving the unique variety of lily as well, he said.
The tourism director further stated that measures have been taken up to ensure smooth travel and stay for both local and foreign tourists. Apart from homestay facilities being arranged to ensure pleasant stay for the tourists, transport facilities will be provided at discounted rates for tourists travelling to the festival. Ukhrul police will also coordinate traffic throughout the festival to ensure smooth flow of traffic, he added.
