Aizawl: As per the news report by EastMojo, at least 114 individuals were convicted by a special court in Aizawl under POCSO Act for sexually molesting and raping minors during the last 5 years.

According to authorities of the Aizawl region court, an aggregate of 465 cases of child molestation and rape were recorded and tried under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012 from 2014 to April 2019.
As per the reports, at least 26 child molestation and rape cases were tried in 2014 under the POSCO Act, 107 cases in 2015, 100 cases in 2016, 109 cases in 2019, 88 cases in 2018.
The officials further informed that 35 cases have been  registered during the current year till April 2019.

The POCSO Act was enacted to provide a robust legal framework for the protection of children from offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography, while safeguarding the interest of the child at every stage of the judicial process.

The framing of the Act seeks to put children first by making it easy to use by including mechanisms for child-friendly reporting, recording of evidence, investigation and speedy trial of offences through designated special courts.
