Chaos and confusion prevailed after a massive explosion rocked the city in the evening hours of May 15th, 2019. Fear psychosis gripped the city dwellers.
As per information available, as many as 11 people sustained severe injuries in the blast. Two persons are said to be critical. Injured persons have been rushed to a Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), KGMT Hospital and Nemcare Super Speciality Hospital.
Two of the injured have been identified as Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan Amulya Lal and Ramesh Lal. The other injured are Fardin Rahman, Ahmed Kumar, Amit Kansal, Riya Kansal, Hirakjyoti Baruah, Kalyan Baishya and Adward Mama.
The blast took place near the Guwahati Central shopping mall located at RG Baruah road.
The eyewitnesses said that two motorcycle-borne men hurled the suspected grenade at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and police personnel who were on duty near the shopping mall.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on May 15th, 2019 directed the director general of police Kuladhar Saikia to take appropriate and immediate action against the perpetrators. “Nobody would be allowed to commit such heinous crimes and strong action would be taken aginst those behind this dastardly act,” the press communique stated.
Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Deepak Kumar, who reached the spot along with other officials, said, “We are investigating the matter. Police might be targeted. Around six people injured in the incident. No casualties reported yet.”
Police have cordoned off the area and have started their investigations. A high alert has been declared in Guwahati following the blast. All entry and exit routes have been put under surveillance.
Minister Pijush Hazarika reached the GMCH to take stock of the conditions of the injured admitted to the hospital.
