guwahati bomb blast

Guwahati: A grenade blast was reported from near the Guwahati Central shopping mall on the busy RG Baruah Road in Guwahati on Wednesday. The incident took place at a crowded location near the state zoo around 7.40 pm.

As per reports, 10 persons, including a child, have been injured in the blast; two of them are said to be critical. The injured have been shifted to the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, banned rebel group ULFA(I) has claimed responsibility for the attack, said reports. ULFA-I Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah said, it was an attack on CRPF petrol.

Later, Guwahati police commissioner Deepak Kumar confirmed that it was a grenade blast and police personnel were targeted by the miscreants. The blast took place during regular police checking in the area, Kumar added.

Confirming that a total of 10 people were injured in the incident, Kumar said: “Strict action will be taken against the culprits. We got the know that the grenade was hurled by two bikers.”

Two SSB jawans were injured in the incident; they are receiving treatment at the GMCH, Kumar confirmed. Two others — a father-daughter duo — were shifted to Nemcare Hospital from GMCH due to the severity of their burn injuries.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has condemned the incident. He directed state DGP Kuladhar Saikia to immediately arrest the people involved in the incident. Saikia, meanwhile, reached the blast site to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, high alert has been sounded in Guwahati following the blast. All entry and exit routes have been put under surveillance.

Assam cabinet minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, too, reached the blast site. “I saw police checking going on. Very unfortunate incident. As a crowded place, civilians have been targeted. We can’t pinpoint anyone unless we receive accurate information. Through this, the militant organisation wanted to prove their power, I believe,” he added.

Another state minister Pijush Hazarika commented: “I condemn the ones behind the attack. Innocent civilians shouldn’t be targeted. This incident shows that Assam is going backward. This is no way to show power. Free medical treatment with all modern medical facilities will be provided to the injured. Killings do not solve any problems.”
