IMPHAL| Sep 2: A combined team of Assam Rifles (AR) and Manipur Police (MP) recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunitions on August 31 at Imphal, said a release from IGAR (South).

Based on specific inputs, a detailed search of the specified area was carried out by the joint team along with Explosive Detector (ED), dog and metal detectors along a track going up a hill feature dominating the Sandangsenba village. The ED dog indicated a suspicious spot which was dug up which revealed a blue coloured plastic sheet which contained two AK-56 Rifles along with two magazines,10 rounds of AK, two 9 mm Pistols and one M-20 Pistol along with three magazines wrapped inside, it said.

Meanwhile, Assam Rifles (AR) recovered brown sugar worth approximately Rs 12.34 crores from Chelep and Moreh of Tengnoupal district on August 28 and 30 in two separate incidents.

Based on specific input regarding smuggling of drugs and contraband items, a unit of AR laid an ambush on Laibi – Chelep road. Two suspicious individuals were stopped and after thorough check of the bag carried by the individuals, 300 packets of suspected brown sugar weighing approximately 12 grams each, with a total weight of 3.6 Kg and cost of approximately Rs 7.20 crores were recovered, it said.

The release also mentioned that in another incident, AR seized a huge quantity of Brown Sugar near New KLP, Moreh. 198 soap cases containing brown sugar neatly packed were found inside the body of the vehicle which was driven by one Lunkhungam Haokip, 38, son of Hunkholun Haokip, resident of Kholep village, Motbung, Kangpokpi district.

The seized contraband drug weighed approximately 1.7 kg with packaging and amounted to approximately Rs 5.14 crore. The individual along with the contraband drug was handed over to the concerned authority, it said.

Meanwhile, Assam Rifles (AR) in two separate operations recovered 90 Radio Sets from Khudengthabi check post, Manipur on September 1.

During routine check of vehicles around 4:10 pm on September 1, a team from AR intercepted a silver colour Maruti van travelling from Moreh to Imphal, and 10 Radio sets of Baofeng make, Model No: UV-8D were recovered from the possession of the driver.

The apprehended individual has been identified as K Jagdish Singh, 37, son of K Jugindro Singh, resident of Bharmapur Nahabam Bamon Leikai, Porompat, Imphal East.

The release further mentioned that in another incident during routine check of vehicles, at around 4:45 pm, the same team intercepted a white colour Maruti van bearing registration number MN01-G-8735 travelling from Moreh to Imphal, and 80 more Radio sets of make Baofeng Model No-BF-888S were recovered.

The vehicle was being driven by K Nogdamba Meitei, son of K. Binoy Meitei. The other passenger was Mohan Aggarwal, 43, son of Radha Ballabh, resident of Thangal Bazar, Imphal West, it said.

All three apprehended individuals along with the seized items were handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigations.
