IMPHAL | Oct 11: Governor, Najma Heptulla urges yoga education amongst the youth can be an effective tool to counter the menace of substance abuse and drug addiction, prevalent widely in the state of Manipur.

The governor suggested it in the opening ceremony of the 24th State Level Yoga Physique Championship 2019 held at MDU Hall, Yaiskul Police Lane today, organised by Yoga Physique Institute and Studies (YPIS) under the theme ‘Yoga for Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Development’.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Najma Heptulla said Manipur has endowed rich heritage of Yoga and constitutes a significant component of the culture of the state. But it remains largely unexplored, she said. Considering the present deteriorating health conditions especially among the youth due to drug addiction, it is high time to find out mechanism to uproot the menace from the state, she added.

The state is famous for its contribution in the field of dance and sports, similarly, Yoga also needs to be taken up for a closer study to understand the historical and cultural meanings of such practices, the governor said.

Najma Heptulla further continued the best way to popularise Yoga is to include it in the school syllabus. Such a step was already taken up by the Central Board of Secondary Education and syllabus already prepared from Class 1 to VIII, she added. “If the state could adopt such strident steps, value-based education can be surely delivered among the future generation”, she pointed out.

The governor exuded confidence that like other states of India, Manipur will also surely establish yoga council in due course of time. Setting up of yoga council will help to regulate, streamline and maintain the standard of yoga education and practices, she informed, while adding the already existing yoga institutes should be strengthened with adequate infrastructures and resources.

She also appreciated the organisers stating that such an event will help to promote good health and humane value. She further said that the theme of the state-level championship is also well coined as it truly condenses the very purpose of Yoga in a few words.

Other dignitaries attended in the function were president, YPISM, Th. Samungou Singh and general secretary, Manipur Thinker Forum, M. Asnikumar Singh as president and guest of honour respectively. As a part of the programme, certificates were also distributed to donors and juries.
