A month after it announced that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will be conducted online and twice a year from 2019, the government on Tuesday rolled back the decision. The exam will now be held in the pen-and-paper mode and not online. Earlier, the Indian Express had reported that the HRD Ministry’s keenness to put off any changes in the NEET’s conduct is influenced by the Health Ministry, which fears an online (read computer-based) test would put students from rural and economically poor families at a disadvantage.

The registration process for NEET 2019 will begin from November 1 and the exam will be held on May 5. However, the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) will be held twice a year.

Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik was on Tuesday appointed as the new governor of Jammu and Kashmir, said Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman. The appointment was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind. Lal ji Tandon will replace Malik as the Bihar Governor.

Among other changes, the President appointed Satyadev Narayan Arya as the Governor of Haryana and Baby Rani Maurya as the Governor of Uttarakhand. Ganga Prasad, the Governor of Meghalaya, has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Sikkim.

The Bharatiya Janata Paty (BJP), which won the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 with a majority on its own, would fall short of the magic number if elections were conducted today, a survey conducted by India Today-Karvy Insights shows. The Mood of the Nation (MOTN) Survey reveals the NDA will manage to win only 281 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, while the Congress, along with its present allies, will secure only 122 seats.

Surprisingly the survey, which was conducted between July 18 to July 29, shows that ‘others’ will have a major bearing on the 2019 general elections and will bag around 140 seats.

Pune-based Cosmos Co-operative Bank Ltd on Tuesday lodged a complaint against an unidentified person and a Hong Kong-based company after the server of its main branch was allegedly hacked twice and over Rs 94 crore transferred to accounts in India and outside the country.

Officials of Cosmos Bank, the second largest cooperative bank in India, said in their complaint at the city’s Chatushringi police station that its servers were hacked on August 11 and August 13.

At least 16 people were killed following heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours, officials said Monday. The government has released Rs 96.50 crore for relief and launched rescue operations across the state.

The state’s chief secretary has directed the deputy commissioners to ensure that educational institutes remain shut Tuesday. As per the state government, after 923 roads were closed due to landslides in the state, including six national highways, the state’s public works department has deployed machinery to make these roads usable again as soon as possible.

BJP national vice-president Om Mathur said that the country would not be allowed to become a ‘dharamshala’ and that National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be implemented throughout the country after the 2019 general election.

The entire country is suffering from the problem of Bangladeshi infiltrators. There is not a single city or town which is not suffering from the problem of Bangladeshi infiltrators, Mathur told reporters in Jhunjhunu district today.

IMPHAL | Aug 5 : The newly completed highway connecting the neighbouring country, Myanmar through Moreh will be officially opened on August 8, said convener of Act East Policy Committee, R.K. Shivananda today in a press conference held today at his residence at Kwakeithel.

The so called ‘India-Myanmar Friendship Road’ was completed by government of India on 13 February 2001 and has been under constant renovation to improve relations with the neighbouring nation. It is under Act East Policy and is of 73.6 km via NH 102. With the official opening of this route, it will surely enhance the communication system and international relations between the two nations, he added.

A seven-year-old was the youngest of 34 girls who were raped at a children's shelter in India's Bihar state, in a case that has led to national anger over the management of care homes for the most vulnerable members of society.

A total of 44 children lived at Seva Sankalp Samiti, a short-stay home for girls who had run away from their families or been rescued from railway stations or the streets.

The oldest victim was 18 years old.

At least 10 people have been arrested so far, including the head of the shelter, Brajesh Thakur, who denies the accusations against him. One of the accused has absconded, police said.

Bangladesh culture minister Asaduzzaman Noor on Tuesday said that there was no question of taking back those excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

Speaking to The Indian Express over phone, Noor said NRC implementation in Assam was not a bilateral issue between Bangladesh and India, therefore such a question does not arise.

“We don’t think we will take back those (people excluded from the final draft of NRC). This is not a bilateral issue between the countries so the question does not arise,” Noor said.

The National Commission for Women (NCW), submitting a report on the two sex scandals in churches in Kerala, has recommended that the government should intervene to abolish the practice of confession in churches as “they come in the way of security and safety of women.”

NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said the commission has sought a probe by a central agency into the two scandals that surfaced last month: one involving four priests of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the second one accusing the Bishop of Jalandhar, Franco Mulakkal, of rape.

Girls of a government-funded shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur have alleged that one of their fellow inmates was beaten to death and buried at the premises of the facility, and several were raped, PTI reported on Monday.

Following the allegations, the Bihar Police has launched a probe and dug up the grounds of the shelter home, but did not find the body. According to ANI, the digging in the shelter home premises has been stopped, no body has been recovered from the spot. A sample of the soil, which has been dug out from the spot, will be sent to Forensic Science Laboratory.
