THOUBAL| May 14

A labourer who was working at a sand mining site along the banks of Thoubal River near Yairipok Leirongthel Pitra fell into the river today, and his body has remained untraceable so far. The victim has been identified as Thangjam Kunje, 42, son of (Late) Lala of Ukhongsang Mayai Leikai

Reports from the site stated the incident took place around 9:30 am today when the labourers were performing their daily task of sand-mining at the river site. The spot where the incident took place is reported to be under heavy water currents as a result of previous sand-mining acts that had led to an increase in its depth.

Meanwhile, locals residing said that they did not give much attention to the incident at first in the belief that the usual sand mining activities were taking place. “But it was only after a few local women noticed that a body was floating in the waters and following shouts from them, that the locals rushed to the spot,” they said adding that in the meantime, the body had sunk into the waters and all attempts to recover the body turned futile. Personnel from Yairipok Fire Service also took part in the search activities for the victim, the locals added.

No information on the recovery of the body has been received yet till the time of filing this report.
