IMPHAL | Aug 16 : State government has declared holiday for government institutions and banks on August 17 as mark of respect for the death of former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari, who expired today at AIIMS hospital, New Delhi.

As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, mourning will be observed throughout India from today till August 22, said a statement by Ministry of Home Affairs.

Chief minister, N. Biren Singh, in his condolence message said that Vajpayee was one of the leading and longstanding politicians of the country, who had left a mark of his own during his long public life.

TAMENGLONG | Aug 16 : Despite the efforts of Parent and Guardian Association, Tamenglong and NFSA Consumer Welfare Association, Tamenglong, to refrain students from taking part in the march past during the 72nd Indian Independence Day celebration at Tamenglong, the event was celebrated in a grand and peaceful manner.

It may be mentioned here that the parent and guardian association has been demanding the district administration to make the Mini Stadium Tamenglong a standard ground while the consumer welfare association is demanding the supply of backlog rice under NFSA.

IMPHAL | Aug 16 : President of United Committee Manipur (UCM), Sunil Karam today recalled the episode of burning down of Manipur Legislative Assembly in 2001 and cautioned the Central government for an intense form of protest that had never happened before, if the government goes against the wish and interest of the people of the state.

The protest against the Naga Framework agreement and extension of Article 371(a) in Manipur continued in many parts of the state. Various sit-in protest were staged at Yairipok Bazaar, Singjamei Bazaar, Thangmeiband, Chingmeirong Khongnang Ani Karak, Chingmeirong Mamang community hall, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Nagamapal, Waheng Leikai. Many auto drivers also halted their daily service and protested at their respective parking lots.

IMPHAL | Aug 16 : At around 7:30 am in the morning today, two trucks and one cruiser jeep were set ablaze along Imphal - Jiribam road near Tupul by suspected supporters of the 24 hours bandh and ban on all national projects constructions works in Zeliangrong areas called jointly by Zeliangron civil bodies.

Moreover, the ongoing national projects including railway line construction remained paralysed by the bandh called by the bodies from midnight of August 15 to midnight of August 16.

The bandh was called as the 72 hours deadline given to arrests the NSCN-lM functionaries who were allegedly giving life threat to leaders of Zeliangrong civil bodies expired.

IMPHAL | Aug 14 : A public meeting against the implementation of Article 371 (A) or similar acts in the state was held at Nambol Keithel today.

It was jointly organised by United Peoples’ Front (UPF), Manipur, Bishnupur District Council, Chaokhat Khongthang Apunba Nupi Lup, Nambol and Nambol Women’s Vendor Association under the aegis of United Committee Manipur (UCM), said a release.

IMPHAL | Aug 14 : Remembering the most significant day of the history of Manipur the state got freedom from the clutches of colonial British, Coalition for Indigenes’ Rights Campaign (CIRCA) today observed 72nd Manipur’s Independence Day at Sana Konung, Palace Compound.

The chief guest of today’s function, titular king, Leishemba Sanajaoba opened the programme by hoisting red flag decorated with the image of Pakhangba (Meitei/Meetei deity) in the Sana Konung where the then king Bodhachandra, last Manipur king, hoisted the same flag on first independence day of the state.

IMPHAL | Aug 14 : Maoist Communist Party Manipur stated that the organisation has given prior notice to the director of RIMS to leave his post but the director has remained silent till date.

A release signed by coordinator standing committee, Kyonghan Mangang said that the silence of RIMS director on the demand is akin to inviting untoward incidents at both inside and outside of the institution. Maoist would not like taking unnecessary confrontations but the director of RIMS is allegedly not doing his duties for the people, it said. RIMS have become a place for getting contract works for his family and relatives, the release alleged.

IMPHAL | Aug 14 : Governor, Najma Heptulla dedicated ‘Development of North East Circuit: Imphal and Khongjom’, the first project under government of India’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme, to the public in the presence of chief minister, N. Biren Singh and union minister of state for Tourism (independent charge), K.J. Alphons at Kangla Fort today.

The project which covers two sites, Kangla Fort in Imphal and Khongjom, was taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 72,22,82,607 under the Union ministry.

IMPHAL | Aug 14 : Not circulating the official order of holding an Assembly session till today even though the government announced it would hold an Assembly session on August 16 clearly shows that the BJP led government are ‘scared’ to hold the Assembly, said spokesperson of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Kh. Joykishan.

The MLA was briefing to media persons today at BT Road office of MPCC.

IMPHAL | Aug 13 : Governor, Najma Heptulla said that she will urged ministry of Human Resource to include Manipur freedom fighters in the Indian history as they are also a major role of free India.

She was speaking as chief guest during the function of Patriots Day observation held today at Bir Tikendrajit Park, Imphal.

Najma said that though the people of the state fought against the colonial rule for free India the names of the martyrs are not included in the Indian history. Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General were hanged to death on the day. Later, other freedom fighters of Manipur, Niranjann Subedar, Kajao and Chirai Naga were also hanged inside Manipur jail by the British.

IMPHAL | Aug 12 : As a precautionary measure for the upcoming 71st Independence Day celebration, mass cordon and search operation and house search was conducted today at various parts of the valley by district police.

For Imphal West district, cordon and search operation was conducted at North A.O.C. and Minuthong area where houses were searched. During the operation, about 225 male and 116 female were verified. Out of them 16 males and 6 females were picked for further verification and were handed over to Imphal police station.

IMPHAL | Aug 13 : The governor has today conferred the award of Manipur Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry to additional SP in-charge (NAB), Th. Brinda and sub-inspector W. Ibomcha Singh.

According to a release signed by Manipur Police PRO, W. Basu, the Manipur Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Outstanding Devotion to Duty are conferred to Noney additional SP, Tholu Rocky, Bishnupur additional SP (law and order), Luikham Lanmiyo, sub-inspector, Timothy Ronamai, sub-inspector, Th. Suraj Singh, subedar, M. Dimratan Singh, havildar, I. Dorendro Meitei, havildar, W. Bishwajit Singh and head constable, Khualthianthang.
