IMPHAL | Feb 6
Police used mock bombs to disperse a group of SSA and RMSA teachers who were staging a peaceful sit in protest at the entrance of Manipur Khadi and Village Industries Board, Lamphelpat today.
The teachers were demonstrating to meet the chief minister who was attending a program at Manipur Khadi and Village industries board.
Speaking to media persons after the incident, executive member of the association Chanchanbala said, “we had been staging a peaceful protest to meet the chief minister in order to place our demands and grievances but the police used mock bomb to disperse us by ignoring that we are teachers.”
A pregnant teacher was also present in the peaceful protest, she added.
The teachers had been demanding the release of pending salaries, to regularise their monthly salaries, to introduce Promotion Avenue with the same level as that of other teachers from Education(S) and to absorb the teachers as state cadre, she added.
She further said that they were recruited as a regular employee but they did not enjoy promotion system and regular pay. The teacher also said that they will continue agitating until they achieved their demands.
Meanwhile, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) Teacher’s Association unit shut down the Zonal Education Office (ZEO), Tamenglong today as part of their indefinite cease work strike which commenced from February 6.
It may be mentioned here that aggrieved by the failure of the State government to treat all 3500 teachers under the joint SSA and RMSA Teachers’ Association Manipur as regular teachers and continual irregularity in releasing their salaries, the association has called the indefinite cease work strike.
Speaking to IFP, a teacher who identified himself as Dominic said that the negligence of the State Government has compelled the irate teachers to call an indefinite cease work strike. These SSA & RMSA teachers receive their salaries only for two or three months in a year while promotion facilities are not provided to them at all, he asserted.
“In solidarity of the indefinite cease work strike imposed by all 3500 teachers under Joint SSA and RMSA Teachers’ Association Manipur Tamenglong unit has begun indefinite shutdown of Zonal Education Office, Tamenglong,” Dominic added.
