Many students under the aegis of the North East Students Organisation and one of its component organisations, All Manipur Students Union took to the streets and marched towards the governor bungalow on Monday protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
However, police intervened and stopped the students at Keishampat Junction from marching further towards the governor’s bungalow. But, a few representatives of the students were allowed to submit a memorandum to the prime minister through the governor. Also, a scuffle broke out between the police and the students, and the latter went back to Keishampat Leimajam community hall where they staged a sit-in protest in the morning.
In the sit-in protest, the students held placards which read: ‘No CAB in northeast’, ‘We strongly opposed CAB 2019’, and they also shouted slogans such as, ‘BJP down down’, ‘No CAB in Manipur’ and ‘Long Live Manipur’.
In the sit-in protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai, secretary-general of All Manipur Students Union, Bipinchandra Ahanthem said to the media that all component organisations of NESO in other northeastern states also staged the protest in their respective states today.
People have apprehensions that CAB is likely to be passed in the winter parliamentary session which begins on Monday, he said and further added that AMSU and NESO will always stand against CAB.
