IFP Bureau | IMPHAL: A seven-member team from the government of India led by retired chief justice, B K Sharma of the High Level committee (HLC) convened a public hearing today at Silchar Circuit House along with members of the Joint Action Committee for Safeguard of Indigenous Manipuri People of Assam for recognition of Manipuris settled in Assam as indigenous people.

The meeting was convened in regard to the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord meant for the safeguarding the indigenous people of the State which was signed between Assam Students Union (AASU) and government of India in 1985.

During the meeting, a team led by chairman of the JAC, A. Nandababu Singha along with its general secretaries, prof Kh Dhiren Singha and K Sowapon Singha stated that Manipur was an independent kingdom.

The HLC later assured the team that the Manipuri community residing in Assam will be recognised as one of the indigenous peoples of the state as the community has strong historical ties with Assam.
