AIZAWL | Sep 30: Union home minister, Amit Shah’s visit to Mizoram to discuss the issue on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill , NGO Co-ordination Committee, a conglomerate of major civil organisations and student bodies, has decided to greet the minister with massive protest on October 5.

The Committee chairman, Vanlalruata said that their main objective is to protest against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

“We do not have any personal hatred against the union home minister, but our main goal is to convey our strong opposition and ire against the proposed Bill to the Centre,” he said. He added that protesters will wear Mizo traditional shawl- Pawndum (shawl that symbolises anguish or lamentation) to register protest against the CAB.

Officials said that Amit Shah will visit Mizoram on October 5 to inaugurate Northeast hand loom exposition in Aizawl. Meanwhile, state BJP appealed to the civil society groups to re-consider their decision.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference here on Monday, state BJP president, professor, JV Hluna said that Shah will visit the State to allay fear about CAB.

“We appeal the NGO Coordination Committee to withdraw its decision, and instead hold talks with the union home minister about the CAB so that the Centre hears the aspiration of the Mizo people,” he said.
