PB Acharya

Correspondent KOHIMA, JUL 20 (NPN) : Outgoing Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya expressed confidence that the protracted Naga political issue would be resolved within 2019 and Nagaland will then become one of the most vibrant and economically independent states among 28 states.

In an interaction with Nagaland Post Saturday at Raj Bhavan, Acharya said “2019 year will be the happiest year for the Nagas. I am 100% sure” adding that sentiments and the goal of Nagas should be respected and identity has to be upheld and Nagaland have to march with triple jet speed for economical development.

Acharya, who will be handing over charge to the new incumbent R.N. Ravi said he was positive that Nagaland will rise to be among the top states in the country and in this regard, appealed to the empowered Nagas living in other parts of the country and abroad to return and strengthen the lives and system at home.

Acharya has completed his five-year tenure and an official farewell programme is expected to be held sometime next week.

During his tenure, Acharya though in his ripe age of 88 years, toured the length and breadth of Nagaland and personally interacted with the people. He was unassuming and always had a heart for the poor and downtrodden. Acharya is not a stranger to Nagaland. He had set foot in Nagaland since the early 60s and had also met the state’s first chief minister P.Shilu Ao.

Acharya said he had experienced both bitter and sweet during his tenure as Governor but would always cherish the love, respect and fellowship he had with the people during the past five years. The outgoing Governor said he was hopeful that the PDA government would ensure political stability, ensure progress and bring change and put behind the political instability witnessed during the last four years.

Concerned with the quality of education, Acharya lamented on the poor performances of government schools though they had well qualified and highly paid teachers.

Hitting out at this syndrome, the Governor opined that it was because there were teachers with dubious qualifications or some appointed through backdoor. In addition, he expressed regrets that even mid-day meal scheme existed only in paper while schools or colleges had no library worth the name nor proper infrastructure. He felt that government must take strong action against this anomaly and strengthen the students at the primary level. He reminded that students in government schools belonged to the poorest sections who should also be empowered.

Acharya said the university must take this up on the agenda to initiate dialogue with industries, trade and commerce, natural resources with the educational system and academics.

He also stressed on inculcating work culture among Nagas instead of expecting easy money and dependability on government.

On what would be his future role after demitting office, Acharya said that being a social activist and from the BJP, he would remain at the disposal of his party if needed. He also expressed a desire to be at the disposal of Nagaland if needed.

Asked to comment on corruption, Acharya said it was very high in Nagaland. He said it was the most dangerous and destructive disease which the government must act against those involved.

On RIIN, Acharya said people should not be confused with RIIN or ILP with NRC. He said NRC was for national citizens and its primary purpose was to prevent illegal immigrants. He said ILPP does not deal with immigrants but with Indian citizens who need to have permit to enter into the state.

He said to strengthen Nagaland, any service giver(employee) should be welcomed but ensure that their Indian citizenship does not conflict with RIIN . He insisted that NRC must be given preference which was for integrity and security of the country.

On eastern Nagaland, he said ENPO people were suffering and that their issues has to be addressed. The governor said justice should be done in all aspect and that there should be no discrimination.
