18 arrested so far by Assam Police for lynching 2 Guwahati boys to death in Karbi Anglong

Guwahati, June 11: Assam police arrested three more persons on Sunday night, taking the total count to 18 till now, in connection with the sensational mob lynching incident in Karbi Anglong.

Two friends Nilotpal Das (29), a sound engineer, and Abhijit Nath (30), an engineering dropout, were beaten to death by the mob on the suspicion that they were child-lifters at Panjuri Kacharigaon under Dokmoka Police Station, Karbi Anglong on June 8. It is reported that the villages in the area were in the grip of panic over child-lifting following circulation of rumors through social media.

A case (No. 33/2018) under Section 302/34 IPC was registered at the Dokmoka Police Station.

On Sunday late night, Assam Police arrested Rupsing Kro (31), Khaosing Bey (25) and Bor Kro (18). They are residents of  Khaibung Kro Gaon under Dokmoka Police Station.

On the other hand, 13 persons were arrested for posting “objectional and offensive” messages and fake messages on the social media platforms.

Among the 13, Assam Police arrested two youth from Guwahati for circulating hate messages on the social media, targetting a particular community, post the Karbi Anglong mob lynching incident on June 8.

As per reports, the duos are residents of Khetri and Pragjyotishpur respectively. The arrested duos have been identified as Bipul Paul and Manab Bora, as per reports.

It may be noted, thousands of students organized protest marches across Guwahati and Assam on Sunday. However, in Guwahati’s Chandmari area, there were reports that police baton-charged protesters after scuffles broke out between the two sides.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been imposed in all the police districts of Guwahati.
