A 56 year old man yesterday shot a 22 year old man to death with his licenced gun at Naoremthong bridge after a heated argument between the two while trying to cross the bridge.
The victim has been identified as one Salam Prashanta, 22, son of S. Tomba of Changangei Uchekon, Imphal and the accused as Chabungbam Budhachandra, 56, son of Ch. Babudhon of Tera Loukrakpam Leikai, Imphal.
Umakanta, a friend of the victim, recalled that the incident occurred due to miscommunication while driving yesterday at about 10.20 pm near Naoremthong bridge.
According to Umakanta, he and some of his friends including the victim went for a musical concert yesterday at Sekmai in two cars.
While returning home and at Naoremthong bridge, Prashanta tried to drive along Tera Loukrakpam Leikai on his Swift car bearing registration number MN06 LA 6624, and at that moment, one Hyundai i20 bearing registration number MN01 G6843 turned towards them without giving proper signal light.
They had some argument from inside the car for a while, said Umakanta.
The man who was driving i20, identified as Budhachandra, then stopped his car and came out and pulled out his licenced gun from his sling bag and point towards Prashanta.
Umakanta said he was driving another car behind Prashanta’s car and as he tried to drive nearer to Prashanta, the accused threatened him to stay away from them.
After some time Budhachandra told Prashanta to get away and as Prashanta got inside his car the accused shot him and fled from the spot, Umakanta narrated.
Decrying the incident locals of Changangei Uchekon, Imphal blocked Tiddim road today from 8 am to 10 am.
President of Uchekon Youth Volunteer Organisation, Sarat Khuman decried that the organisation strongly condemned the incident and also issuance of gun licence to anyone. “The government should cancel the entire gun license from the state to avoid such incident in the near future” he said.
He reiterated that by issuing gun licence to anyone, people who possessed guns under the licence consciously or unconsciously promote gun culture which is similar to the gun fight of cowboys in some western countries. Many have been victimised with licenced gun and government should take precautionary measures while issuing licence of gun to any individual, he added.
According to the people’s action committee formed in relation with the incident, it demands that the culprit must booked and given relevant punishment according to law and to give necessary assistance to the family member of the deceased.
Later MLA, Soibam Subhachandra came to console the protestors blocking the said road. MLA also met the family members of Prashanta regarding the issue and their demand. In the negotiation MLA gave assurance to take necessary steps from the government.
After his assurance, the protestors lifted their blockage of the road.
