Crime against children in Garo Hills is on the rise with yet another rape case being reported from the region, just few days after a 13 year old was reported to have been raped by 10 men over 2 months in North Garo Hills.
The district was in for another shocker after the arrest of a 36 year old man, Jaseng D Shira, who raped his 10 year old minor step daughter in the village of Nameram under Kharkutta police station.
According to sources, Shira was caught red handed while he was allegedly assaulting the minor girl in their house by villagers, who later gave him a round of sound thrashing, before handing him over to the police at the Dainadubi Outpost.
“He was allegedly molesting the girl when caught. However when the girl was taken for a medical, she revealed that earlier too she had been raped on numerous occasions by her step father,” said a local police source.
Details of how the incidents took place were revealed to the police by the mother, who too was witness to the barbaric act of Shira.
“He would come home drunk and chase after the mother with weapons just to get her to run away from the house. When she went away, he took his chance with the young minor and raped her on numerous occasions,” said a resident of the village of Nameram.
Shira was arrested yesterday after being handed over by the villagers and forwarded to the Court in Tura. A case under POCSO has been registered against the accused.
“This is utterly condemnable and words are not enough to express our sadness at the brutal exploitation of a minor by her step father. It is barbaric and a huge breach of trust,” said social activist, Chenchang Marak, a resident of Dainadubi.
