Guwahati, September 24: Assam has registered a steep rise in incidence of rape cases during the last couple of years.
In the state, rape cases have been in the rise in Barpeta, according to information provided by the Assam Government in the State Assembly on Monday.
A total of 3,420 incidents of rape took place in Assam in the last two years. 1,552 rape cases were registered in 2016-2017 and the number went up to 1868 in 2017-18, 1,868 cases in 2017-2018, State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary informed in the State Legislative Assembly while replying to question raised by AIUDF legislator Md Hafiz Basir Ahmed.
The highest number of rape cases was registered in Barpeta – 148 in 2016-17 and 216 in 2017-18.
A total of 2,438 murder cases were registered in 2016-17 and 2017-18, out of which 4,187 persons were arrested in the cases of murder and rape from different parts of the state.
Patowary informed that the state has constituted as many as 64 women shelter houses in the state covering all the districts. Also, a Task Force has been constituted to co-ordinate and invigilate the issues.
Also, the Cyber Training Lab keeps a strict vigil on the social media monitoring the harassment faced by women and a Women Help Line 181 has been released, he said.
On the other hand, a total of 32,248 theft cases, 359 dacoity, 15,741 kidnapping, 10,296 sexual harassment, 4,130 rape, 15,470 dowry harassment, 6,275 road accidents and 21 death cases due to superstitions were registered in Assam during January-August, 2018.
In Guwahati, 8,295 theft cases, 13 dacoity, 457 sexual harassment, 1,543 kidnapping, 161 rape, 1,544 dowry harassment and 606 road accidents were registered in Assam during January-August, 2018.~Time8
