Guwahati, September 2: BJP legislator from Hojai, Shiladitya Dev stoked another controversy by claiming that the Assam Government has “wasted” Rs 1,200 crore in the updation exercise of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
It may be mentioned that a case has been registered against Dev for allegedly making controversial statements on the draft NRC.
“The updation process of the NRC is full of corruption. Though the updation exercise was taken up to protect the identity of the indigenous people but it is going to backfire. Several people are bribing the officials to get their names included in the NRC,” said Dev.
He added, “Due to the updation work, the developmental work is at halt in the state. All the officials are busy with NRC.”
Hojai MLA further said that several “valid citizens” have been excluded from the draft NRC despite having requisite documents.
“This proves that the updation procedure is full of errors. There should be an exclusive monitoring committee to look after the updation process. Several Bangladeshi Muslims from Dhubri, Barpeta, Cachar, Karimganj and Goalpara have been included in the draft NRC,” he added.
