JIRIBAM | Jul 8 : The hanging bridge over Barak River broke down when a truck loaded with sand tried to cross it at around 11:00 am the morning today.
Sources added that several vehicles are now stuck near the bridge and it might take two days to repair the broken bridge. Meanwhile light vehicles and two wheelers are allowed to cross the old bridge at Barak River.
The truck bearing registration number MN01 AA -1074 and belonging to Bharatia Company, was travelling from Barak side to reach Sibilong when the bridge broke down. According to supervisor of Bharatia Pvt Ltd Company, Anand, the bridge was already under heavy constraint due to a crack on the Clam on the underside of it and since the crack was not visible from above, the truck had tried to cross it resulting in the breakdown of the bridge. He also assured that the bridge will be repaired before July 11 and in the meantime, light passenger vehicles will be allowed to use the Old Bridge.
The supervisor additionally informed that more than 150 loaded trucks headed for Imphal and over 100 trucks bound for Jiribam are now stuck near the bridge while adding a request to authorities concerned not to send anymore loaded trucks from Jiribam while repair works are going on.~IFP
