Border village high school in shambles

UKHRUL | Nov 28

The building of Frontier High School at New Tusom today lies in shambles and is yet to be repaired or renovated since its establishment in 1972.

The school was upgraded to Junior High School in 1998 and to High School in 2000. The lone government high school of the remote area is functioning with six teachers and headmaster in-charge.

The school which have groomed so many children from the border areas is today functioning with old and shabby classroom and without proper benches and desks. The school is without separate toilet for boys and girls and there is no connection of water supply for drinking purpose. The entire school building is in a dilapidated condition and needs immediate measure looking at the greater interest of the children from border areas.

New Tusom falls under Jessami Block and is about 100 km from Ukhrul district headquarter and situated near the International Border Pillar No. 129. Due to its remoteness, connectivity problem and poor economic living condition, most of the parents from New Tusom and villages bordering Myanmar could not send their children to outside for further studies. Some parents out of compulsion, due to lack of teaching staffs have to send their children to Ukhrul and other places for further studies.

Secretary of Village Development Council of New Tusom, Chinaorar Horam informed that since its establishment in 1972, the school has not been renovated or repaired.

He said in May 2018, the classroom was filled with water from the reeking roof and walls and consequently, regular classes could not be conducted. This has become a regular routine for the schools especially when it rains, he added. At one such time, the village development council took up temporary repairing of the school building, he said.

Chinaorar appealed the authority concerned for immediate construction of new building so that the village and its neighbouring villages bordering Myanmar can expect greater generation in the future.
