Defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman to inaugurate Sangai Fest

Defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman will open this year’s Sangai Festival 2018 at Hapta Kangjeibung tomorrow.

Ahead of the grand opening of the biggest tourism festival of the State, chief minister, N. Biren Singh inspected the preparations going on at Manipur Trade and Expo Centre, Lamboikhongnangkhong in Imphal West district, which is one of the festival venues today.

Speaking to media personnel, he said that this year’s Manipur Sangai Festival is going to create history because it is being planned to organise in three venues of both hill and valley districts viz. Imphal, Mao and Keibul Lamjao for the first time.

Moreover, many foreign dignitaries are also attending the festival, he said while adding that around 100 delegates from Myanmar would reach Imphal tonight to witness the grand event.

Informing that the festival would be held for three days at Mao and ten days at Imphal and Keibul Lamjao, N. Biren Singh said that Sangai Run would be conducted at all these venues tomorrow at 7:30 am simultaneously.

Forest minister, Th. Shyamkumar would inaugurate the festival at Keibul Lamjao while the main inauguration function, which would be held at Hapta Kangjeibung at 4:00 pm, would be attended by union defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman as the chief guest.

The defence minister would land at Imphal Airport in a special flight at around 3:30 pm tomorrow, N. Biren Singh said.

The CM appealed to the people of the State to give best hospitality to tourists and delegates visiting the State during the festival and guide them with utmost decency.

He also urged the public to extend cooperation to the Government in keeping the roads, public places and surroundings neat and clean. He also urged all concerned not to call any type of bandh or blockade during the festival.

Speaking to media persons at a press meet held today at the Directorate of Tourism, tourism director, W. Ibohal said that same as every year, the state of Manipur celebrates the Manipur Sangai Festival from November 21 to 30.  

This year, Sangai Festival 2018 will be opened by the defence minister. Unlike the previous editions of the festival, 2018 edition of the Sangai Festival will be organised at different five locations in Imphal and Bishnupur district, he informed.

Tomorrow, Sangai Festival 2018 will be opened at Keibul Lamjao and at the evening, defence minister will inaugurate the same at Hapta Kangjeibung. This year, 99 stalls from foreign country and 112 stalls from India will be opened.

Informing about the entertainment programme at Lamboi Khongnangkhong, modern entertainment programme will be conducted; there will be trade and commerce expo as well. And at Khuman Lampak, indigenous sports will be held, he further informed. At the indoor stadium of Khuman Lampak, Somo Wrestling from Japan will be held, he added.

As per an announcement made by CM of Manipur to organise a Cherry Blossom festival as a part of Sangai Festival this year, tourism directorate will cover Cherry Blossom Festival as well. On November 22 and 23, national and international senior citizens will take visits to the festival.

He said Sangai Library stall will be opened for needy students and it may provide help to some needy students. There are plans to open Sangai library at any place for needy students, he informed. has been opened to expose the hidden talents which were unable to be exposed at other places. He said CM of Manipur has registered first on site and he will sing a song. This year at Sangai Festival Hashtek has been opened to take feedback.

Answering a query from media person, director of tourism said this year Sangai Festival will be managed under 9 crore, last year it took 13.1 crore.

He asked security department to arrange the parking system to prevent noise pollution, and change the system from previous editions.
