Flood cripples life in Manipur valley

IMPHAL | Jun 13 : Manipur government has declared holiday for all government offices and educational institutions including private sectors under the government, as flood hits most part of Imphal city in few days rainfall.

The incessant rain has overflowed most of the major rivers that run through Imphal city particularly the Imphal and Nambul rivers.

As the main rivers flowing in Imphal overflow residential areas in Imphal and valley areas are submerged in flood.

Agricultural lands including fish farms have been affected by the flash flood.

Campuses of educational institutions and government establishments are widely affected.

The flood impact in Imphal came to light when the Imphal river was breached at Checkon area at around 2 am.

People complain for help, however a rescue team of police trainees at the strength of 50 arrives at Chekon and its nearby areas in Imphal East.

Later in the afternoon chief minister N. Biren Singh visited some of the flood affected sites including the mainly affected area of Checkon.

He instructed the concerned officials to open relief camps and take stalk of situations round the clock. He appealed the people to be alert of the natural calamity and inform to the help line.

The flood control room has provided the helpline number 0385-2451550, which is available round the clock.

While people await for news especially of the flash flood the AIR, Imphal has stopped airing its service as its complex has been submerged in the flood.

An official of AIR, Imphal said AIR staff is regretted of the inconvenience. “We are trying to resume our service at least to provide news initiating service at Mayang Imphal station,” he added.

Many remain homeless and complains fill the air of weak response from the government. So far no civil society organisations raise helping hand for the victims.

As per the Indian meteorological department rainfall would continue till Friday.

All the five Ithai barrage gates have been opened since today morn. Out of the five gates only three of them were partially opened even if the state appealed people to remain alert predicting of possible flood and landslides.

Assam Rifles rushed Singjamei Kshetri Leikai and extended helping hand fighting the water flow.
