JUST 18 months after running her first competitive race — an inter-district meet in Sivasagar, Assam — 18-year-old Hima Das has created athletics history. The daughter of a rice farmer from Dhing village in Nagaon district, she got India its first ever track gold at a global event by winning the 400 metre final at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Tense on the starting block, Hima started slow and trailed on the home stretch, but her blazing run in the final 80m, where she overtook three rivals, saw her clocking 51.46 seconds.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced to lead a delegation of ministers to Delhi on Friday to meet the HRD Minister in a bid to end the impasse at Manipur University. This comes after the volunteers of the agitating Joint College Forum of Manipur University closed all the affiliated 86 colleges in the state on Thursday and served a three-day ultimatum to the government to solve the crisis.

“We would press the ministry to constitute a fact-finding committee to probe into the allegation levelled against Manipur University’s Vice-Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey. In the meantime, we have been discussing the possibility of temporarily relieving the V-C of his administrative power during the investigation period,” said the Chief Minister addressing mediapersons at his bungalow.

In separate incidents that have created a sensation in Assam, bodies of two women were found in less than 24 hours from washrooms of different trains. In both cases, traditional towels — called “gamusa” in Assam —were found around the victim’s neck. Prima facie probe and marks on the victims’ neck have led the police to suspect that they were strangulated.

On Wednesday, a resident of Dibrugarh district, identified as Lalima Devi (48), was found dead in a washroom of Avadh Assam Express, which runs between Assam and Rajasthan. The body was discovered when the train reached Mariani station in Jorhat district around 2.20 pm.

TAMENGLONG | Jul 11 : Seven people were killed and two are still missing in devastating landslides caused by nonstop heavy rain in Tamenglong district. Search operations were still going on till the time filing of this report.

The first ill-fated incident happened between 2:30 am and 3:00 am in which a huge mudslide buried one house at New Salem, Tamenglong ward no. IV killing five siblings who were sleeping inside.

The five are Tigailiu Riamei, 18, studying in Class XI at Tamenglong Higher Secondary School, Peichunliu, 16, studying in Class VIII at Jr. High School, Model village,  Gaikurei, 14, studying in Class VII at Gadailong Primary School,  Guangthuanchui, 12, studying in Class IV at Pretty Lamb Institute and Pouhotlung, 9, studying in Class III at Pretty Lamb Institute.

Throwing their weight behind the students’ agitation at Manipur University in demand of the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation, all the deans and 28 heads of departments at the university have resigned.

The agitation led by Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) has been on since May 30. Students have been demanding V-C Professor Adya Prasad Pandey’s resignation over multiple allegations of administrative negligence and carelessness in running the university.

Pandey has claimed that the allegations are false and declined to resign.

IMPHAL | Jul 8 : Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs’ Association (MUSA) claimed that the alleged arson at the university’s indoor stadium is a devious effort to derail the legitimate and democratic agitation taken up by the bodies.

Moreover, the MU bodies condemned the assault on students by security personnel yesterday when the students were trying to submit a memorandum to chief minister demanding declaration of college semester examination result.

Guwahati/ Agartala, July 6: Once again Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb, whose gaffes, one after the other, embarrassed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the last few months, is in a tight spot after dodging a reporter’s poser on mob lynching in the state and stating that there is a “wave of happiness in Tripura”.

As per reports, when a reporter sought his comment on mob lynching, he said, “Tripura mein ek anand ka leher chala hua hai. Aap bhi is leher ko upbhog kijiye. Aap ko anand aana chaiye… mera chehra dekhiye… mujhe kitni khushi ho rahi hai. yeh sarkar janta ka sarkar hai, janta action legi (I think that you all should think that today there is a wave of happiness in Tripura. You should also enjoy this happiness wave and you will also become happy. Look at my face, how happy I am. It’s people’s government and people will take action).”

Three civilians, including a teenage girl, were killed after security forces opened fire on a group of protesters in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday. The death of the three persons has triggered protests, due to which the government has suspended internet services in the area.

According to villagers, clashes broke out when security forces detained several youths at Hawoora and Mishpora villages of Khudwani in the district. Locals resorted to stone pelting, forcing the security personnel to retaliate by opening firing at the protesters. At least five persons were injured in the incident.

Students and faculty of the Manipur University are set to take part in a hunger strike from July 9 till July 21 demanding the removal of the vice-chancellor. Separate departments of the University would be participating in the 13-day strike with the Mathematics and Statistics department kick-starting the hunger strike, said the general secretary of the teacher’s union, Profesor L. Shanjukumar.

Jointly organised by the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU), Manipur University Staffs’ Association (MUSA) and the Manipur University Teachers’ Union (MUTA), the MUSU has been protesting against VC Adya Prasad Pandey since May 30, leading to a shutdown of the administrative block.

Just three days back, 17-year-old Saoyang Huang, a 12th standard student of Dimapur’s Livingstone Foundation School,  made a resolve not to waste food. A week in the paddy fields of Chizami village located in the Nagaland’s Phek District last month, has made the youngster realise “how hard a farmer works to feed all of us.” “We would wake up at 6.30 am, go for a walk (that was our quiet time!) and later in the day, we would work in the paddy fields. Sometimes it would rain, but we would continue working anyway,” he says.

Guwahati/New Delhi, July 3: The National Investigation Agency (NIC) recovered over Rs 40 lakh in cash, demonetized currency notes and gold from the residence of a former director of an Imphal-based medical institute as part of a terror-financing probe against a banned outfit in Manipur.

According to information, as part of a probe into the financing of and supply of arms, ammunition, and explosives to the proscribed terror group Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), the agency raided the residence of Shyamo Singh, former director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) on Monday.

A joint team of Assam Rifles and Army under the aegis of DAO division conducted operations in Motongsa village in Arunachal Pradesh and destroyed three major NSCN (I-M) camps and a logistic base.
 
According to a press statement by Kohima based PRO (Defence), the massive operation was launched based on specific intelligence about presence of cadres trying to terrorize and attempting extortion in and around Motongsa village.
