Jailed MU professors brought to hospital in handcuffs says MU JAC statement

IMPHAL | Oct 14 : The six professors of Manipur University who were arrested during the police raid on the midnight of September 20 following an FIR lodged by professor, K. Yugindro were brought to hospital handcuffed for medical check-up, a press release by the JAC of MU community said.

The JAC vehemently condemned the act of equating and treating the teachers as if they were hard-core criminals and termed it as an inhuman act and an insulting to the profession.

In an emergency meeting of the JAC which comprised of MUSU, MUTA and MUSA, the members expressed extreme shock and anguish on hearing that the professors lodged in jail under false charges were taken to hospital in handcuffs.

It said while the veracity of the charges in the FIR are being questioned by the public, especially after the admission of Prof. Yugindro himself that the complaints in the FIR are false charges, the members expressed dismay that the varsity faculty were treated in such an insulting manner, degrading the status of their profession and the university.

Two members of the varsity community have already lodged two separate FIRs against Yugindro for allegedly providing false and fabricated information to Singjamei police station but still no action is taken up against Yugindro.

According to a source, the newly appointed administrator, Jarnail Singh yesterday met Prof. Yugindro and enquired about matters.

The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has also directed the authorities concerned to submit a report regarding the midnight police raid at the Manipur University within four weeks.

It has also warned of action against the authorities concerned under section 13 of the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993, and may ask them for personal appearance if the report is not received within the stipulated time.

NHRC has given the direction following a complaint lodged by human rights activists from Tamil Nadu, Henri Tiphagne regarding the raid at the Manipur University.
