Guwahati/ Agartala, July 6: Once again Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb, whose gaffes, one after the other, embarrassed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the last few months, is in a tight spot after dodging a reporter’s poser on mob lynching in the state and stating that there is a “wave of happiness in Tripura”.
As per reports, when a reporter sought his comment on mob lynching, he said, “Tripura mein ek anand ka leher chala hua hai. Aap bhi is leher ko upbhog kijiye. Aap ko anand aana chaiye… mera chehra dekhiye… mujhe kitni khushi ho rahi hai. yeh sarkar janta ka sarkar hai, janta action legi (I think that you all should think that today there is a wave of happiness in Tripura. You should also enjoy this happiness wave and you will also become happy. Look at my face, how happy I am. It’s people’s government and people will take action).”
Four persons were killed in separate mob attacks last week in Tripura over rumours of child-lifting.
By saying “wave of happiness”, Deb was referring to the newly renamed Agartala airport as Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Kishore Airport, after the former king. His statements were condemned by the local leaders and citizens.
It may be mentioned that the 46-year-old chief minister had earlier triggered controversies and was brutally roasted on social networking sites when he said that “Internet and satellite communication existed even during the Mahabharata era”.
He also questioned the crowning of Diana Hayden as Miss World in 1997 and said that she was “not an Indian beauty like Aishwarya Rai”.
The next blooper stated that the graduates shouldn’t run after government jobs and instead start paan shops. Deb also suggested that young men should breed cows and explore a career in dairy and mechanical engineers should not opt for civil services, but civil engineers should.
Deb led the BJP to victory in the 2018 Legislative Assembly Election, defeating 25 years rule of the Left Front government led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).~Time8
