Manipur govt. seeks to revive School libraries

Our correspondent
Imphal, Sep. 10 (EMN): The government is planning to revive the library for select Government Higher Secondary Schools in the state, stated Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam. Highlighting the importance of
library he said that it is not only important in terms of education but also in inculcating the habit of reading among the young minds.
The minister was speaking as the chief guest at the One Day Public Awareness Programme held in memory of Late
Dr Huirongbam Atulchandra Singh for his contribution in Establishing Public Library in Manipur at Library Conference Hall, Manipur University.

Radheshyam said that the library stores knowledge in the form of book and resources. Whenever one looks up for a record or information, library can be a source of it. Books, he added are the expression of the experiences of one’s life in which the image of a society is reflected. He also said creative writing among the people needs to be motivated to flourish and built a momentum of popularising the literature.

He said that the decline in the habit of reading among the children could be because they are being pushed towards getting higher grades and passing the exam rather than encouraging them to read and learn. To prepare the young minds for the challenges that would be thrown in life, he emphasised that library plays an important role.

He said that books are one of the binding forces that could ensure peace and tranquility in the state. He added that by reading books and understanding the values of the practices about the culture, custom and traditions, one can reinstate harmony in diversity.

The minister also urged for concerted effort from every section of the society to work for uplifting the government school. He said it is important that public should regard the school as their own and protect the school property.

The purest form of holiness is the school where children from different background come to get education to secure the future, he added.
