Manipur: Man who made death threats to Chief Minister Biren Singh arrested

A joint team of Imphal West district police, Tamil Nadu police and Delhi police (Special Cell) on Thursday arrested a man who made death threats to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The accused has been identified as Ali Ahmed alias Babuji, 32, a resident of Lalpani, Khairabad of Cachar, Assam.

Babuji was arrested from Tamil Nadu’s Bathalapalli region by the joint team under the coordination of IGP Manipur, Clay Khongsai. Police said Babuji, a Manipuri resident, uploaded a clip on social media on October 5 threatening to murder the CM and used defamatory and anti-social words. In the video, Babuji also threatened to wage a war against the state, following which Manipur police registered an FIR against him.

Babuji’s threats came in the wake of the death of one Md Farooque. Farooque was beaten to death at Tharoijam for allegedly stealing a scooter. “What is this government doing? Biren, do you want to live or die, we know your movement, don’t let the Farooque incident happen again with any community and pass a legislation in this regard,” he is seen saying in the video before giving an ultimatum of one month’s time. His video went viral on social media.

When police went to arrest Babuji, he was not found at his Cachar residence and was later tracked down to Tamil Nadu where he was working at an iron industry. “Distance is not a problem and the long arms of the law will ultimately reach you. The police does not take such a threat to a state leader lightly,” said SP Jogeschandra Haobijam.

A Manipur police team, led by Lamphel OC Sougrakpam Chandrakumar, brought the accused to Imphal around 3 pm. He was produced before the JMIC-Imphal West-II and remanded to police custody till November 14. He was charged with Sections 505(1)(b)(c)/ 505(2)/506(a)(b)/507 of the Indian Penal Code. Police also said that two people involved in the circulating the video were sent to judicial custody.
