A 14 years old boy died on the spot while 15 passengers including a Japanese couple sustained injury when a tourist bus they were travelling plunged into a deep gorge near Kangpokpi district headquarters this morning at around 11:20 am.
The Airbus bearing registration number MN01-1944 was heading towards Imphal from Dimapur with huge luggage of around 20 passengers before it plunged into the approximately 50 metres deep gorge in between Changoubung village and Kangpokpi DHQs along the National Highway-2.
The minor boy identified as Ningthoujam Momocha, son of Kumar (driver of the ill-fated bus) from Khangabok, Thoubal died instantly on the spot while 15 other passengers including the Japanese couple who came to visit Ima Keithel at Imphal sustained injuries. Only few escaped unhurt in the accident.
The dead body of the minor boy was recovered by Kangpokpi police while the injured persons were brought to District Hospital Kangpokpi where they were given medical treatment with the help of the local people and police personnel.
Speaking to media persons at the district hospital, the Japanese man, who is identified as Futa Matsui according to his Passport and Visa, said that he and his girlfriend, Kanako Ikai have come to visit Ima Keithel for shopping and various other purposes. The accident was so sudden that he could not recollect anything, he added.
The other injured victims as per details available at the district hospital are Stalone Aimol of Ngairong, Tengnoupal district; S. Khamting Aimol of Aimol Satu village, Tengnoupal district; Dilbung Renghong Lamkang of Angkhelchayeng, Chandel district; Thanglenmang Baite of Hengkeng, Churachandpur district; Kaikhohao Baite of Leisanbung, Churachandpur district; Ngamkhogin Baite of B Phaicham, Churachandpur district; Thangdoumang Baite of B Phaicham, Churachandpur district; Ngami of Ukhrul district; Ningam Haoshinwun of Ukhrul district; Dearboy Mashangve of Ukhrul district; Ramngachan Mahukva of Ukhrul district; Kumar (Bus Driver) of Khangabok, Thoubal district and Seiboigin Vaiphei of Motbung, Kangpokpi district.
Earlier, many accidents had already been reported in the particular site and it can be declared as an ‘Accident Prone Area’ by the authority concerned while it is extremely necessary to construct a barricade at the site with a warning signboard so as to avoid further fatal accident in the future.
Deputy commissioner of Kangpokpi, Rangitabali Waikhom with her SDC (HQ), Kaigoulal Kipgen immediately rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. The DC got fractured in her knee and hand while climbing down the deep gorge for proper inspection of the accident.
Commendably, for the first time an official vehicle belonging to DC Kangpokpi has been used for transporting the accident victims till Imphal from District Hospital Kangpokpi for further medical treatment. All the injured victims were referred Imphal and they were transported by ambulance of the district hospital and official vehicle of the DC.
Apart from the District Administration and Kangpokpi Police, Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organisation and Kangpokpi Youth Union provided maximum hospitality to the injured victims such as food, tea and snacks and helped the victims find their entire luggage safe and secure. They also accompanied the referred victims till Imphal. The condition of the Japanese woman is stated to be critical till the time of filing of this report.
