IMPHAL | May 15 : To boost agricultural production in Senapati district, minister of PHED, L. Dikho yesterday initiated the construction of a multi-purpose irrigation project on Barak river at Obai, Kaibi. The foundation stone for the project was laid by the minister in the presence of Mao Council president, S. P. Peter Khrasi.
The irrigation project once completed is expected to cater to more than 5000 acres of paddy fields and other agricultural activities.
Minister of public health engineering department called upon the gathering to support all developmental projects in order to bring all round development in the district. L. Dikho, also inspected the project site to study its feasibility and assured all support to ease the hardship faced by the people.
Also speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Mao Council president, Peter Khrasi said that a long cherished dream of the people is fulfilling now with the support and initiative of the minister. He called for collective efforts from all stakeholders as the project would benefit all the farmers of surrounding areas.
The villagers, meanwhile, have assured all possible support for the project. Once the project is materialized, it can become a tourist spot benefiting the people of the area, said a villager. The project could also help farmers in double cropping besides fishery, which in turn, would double the income of the farmers, he added.
The villagers of the area have also expressed gratitude to the minister for taking initiative to uplift the farmers of the area in particular and district in general.
