NAB seizes 3kg of party drug ‘Methaqualone’ worth Rs. 15 crore

For the first time in Manipur, a team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) led by additional SP, Th. Brinda seized three kilograms of the notorious part drug Methaqualone alias Mandrax crystals on January 8 from Air Cargo section of Imphal Airport.

The total value of the drugs is estimated to be worth around Rs. 15 crore in the international market.

A statement issued by SP NAB and Police PRO, W. Basu, the drugs were found concealed inside a hidden chamber of Bangle Hollow Tube Forming Manchine, heavy machinery used for gold jewelry industry.

Presumptive test conducted on the seized drugs samples by PSL Pangei has shown the presence of Methaqualone, it said.

It further stated that Methaqualone is a banned psychotropic substance under scheduled 1 of NDPS Act 1985 and it is popularly known as Quaaludus, Bandits, Disco Biscuits, Flowers, Vitamin Q, Lovers, 714, Soap, Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde and others.

The SP further informed that Methaqualone is a pharmaceutical depression popularly refers to as Mandrax in South West Asia and Africa and is a synthetic, barbiturate like, central nervous system depressant.

The drug is also an anxiolytic (used for reducing anxiety) and sedative-hypnotic drug and it typically comes in tablet or capsule form and is taken orally. However, in certain cases it is crushed and smoked and heavy abusers liquefy it and inject into their veins, it added.

It is completely tasteless and odourless and its effects are extremely potent causing heavy abuse and fast addiction. Overdosing on Quaaludes can be fatal, especially when it is combined with other medication or alcohol.

A case has been registered at Narcotics and Affairs of Border police station and investigation is going on, it added.

In separate incident, on January 7, a team of Narcotic Cell, Imphal East has seized 10 kilogram of opium from the possession of two women drug peddlers during frisking and checking at Koirengei Public School crossing area.

The two women drug peddler are identified as Ngaikim Kipgen, 50, wife of Luakhotinthang of Golngaijang, Kangpokpi and Marry Luphang, 27, wife of Amang Luphang of Purum Likli presently residing at Checkon.

They were arrested instantly and a case has been registered at Heingang police station and investigation is going on.
