Vechulou Kanuo, executive director of Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS), was among the three grassroots women leader who bagged the “CII Woman Exemplar 2018” award.
The award was given away by Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu on April 8 at a function in New Delhi.
Among the 15 finalists from across the country, only three persons were selected for the award by an eminent panel from the Industry and social sector. Kanuo received the award in field of micro-enterprise segment. Two other awardees included Munni Begam and Asha.
Kanuo, who took over as secretary of CWWS in 2000-- an NGO under Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC), led it to a vibrant social organisation that transformed the lives of innumerable rural women and communities under Phek district.
Kanuou was able to usher in modern agriculture and animal husbandry system to 10,586 women, farmers and youth, seeding thousands of small entrepreneurs in the deep rural interiors of Nagaland.
The Award is part of the CII Foundation Woman Exemplar Program (WEP) which focuses on promoting women’s empowerment at community levels by discovering and recognizing those persons who have carried out exemplary work for the uplift the society.
