IMPHAL | Sept 29 : The chairmanship of Chandel Autonomous District Council (ADC) which has been lying vacant for the last three months has been filled today through an election. The new elected chairman is D. Ringo Lamkang of BJP, he won with a margin of 17 to 6 votes.
There were two nominees contesting for the post of chairmanship, D. Ringo from 10, Aihang district council constituency and Th. Joy Lamkang from 8, Komlathabi district council constituency
Briefing media personnel, presiding officer of the election, Hopeson Chothe said that the post of chairman for Chandel ADC has been remaining vacant since June 19, when the then ADC chairman, Lhukhoser Zou alias Shesei Zou was arrested by Narcotic and Affairs of Border (NAB) for being involved in drug smuggling.
“We waited for him to resign, but since he did not, the House of ADC Chandel through motion of removal removed him from the post. And as the chairmanship of any council should not be left vacant, this election is conducted,” said the presiding officer.
Hopeson also said that the election of the chairman was conducted in accordance with the rules made under The Manipur (Hill Areas) District Councils Act 1972.
The election was slated began at 11:00 am with attendance of all 23 elected members of Chandel ADC except for the former chairman, who is presently in judicial custody.
Ringo is a candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party and won the election with 17 votes and Joy Lamkang of Congress party managed to get six votes during the polling held today at ADC Bhavan, Sangakpham.
