IMPHAL | Jul 30 : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has raided the quarters of Congress MLA from Saikhul, Yamthong Haokip at his Mantripukhri residence today. Till the drafting of this report, the raid is still on-going as per a reliable source.
The raid is part of the investigation which NIA is conducting, following the authorisation given to NIA by the state government concerning the case of 56 numbers of 9 mm pistols which went missing from the 2 Manipur Rifles arms kote.
NIA sleuths came in the morning accompanied by Manipur Rifles personnel and state police. At around 11.30 pm, IFP saw that the MLAs house was under guard and many police vehicles were inside the compound. The security also barred other people from going inside the residence as search was conducted by the NIA, sources said that they were looking for the missing pistols.
It may be stated that the state government has suspended four of its senior police officers, including an IPSofficer, after the pistols went missing from the armoury of the Manipur Rifles (MR) garrison. A suspension order was issued by the state government which include a sub-divisional Police officer (SDPO), CO in-charge of 3rd India Reserve Battalion (IRB), Additional SP Jiribam and a Superintendent of Police Kamjong district.
The Manipur government reportedly purchased a consignment of 570 numbers of 9mm pistols on September 11, 2014, for use by the state’s security forces. Of the total, 56 numbers of 9mm pistols, along with 59 magazines, were found missing from the armoury which was guarded at all times.
The incident came to light after the commandant of the 2nd MR, P Manjit, examined the current holdings of arms and ammunitions of both the unit and police head quarters (PHQ) Pool. Subsequently, the commandant lodged an FIR with the concerned police station.
It has been reported that five suspects involved in the case, including two personnel of the MR and a cadre of a Kuki militant, have been arrested by the police.~IFP
