CPI(M) party’s Ex-District Level member of Panisagar subdivison,Tapas Sutradhar (51), was brutally murdered yesterday night while he was returning home after attending a marriage ceremony. His throat was slit and murdered late night yesterday. His body was recovered by locals today morning. A case has been registered under section 302 at Panisagar police station by the deceased’s brother but police has been unable to arrest anyone as of now.

While speaking to TNT- The North East Today, CPI(M) State Secretary Bijan Dhar condemned the incident and accused BJP for this brutal murder.

GUWAHATI: BJP president Amit Shah here on Monday said BJP has steered the northeast to unprecedented development and the region is set to become the biggest contributor to the country's GDP.

"The northeastern states will soon become the biggest contributor to the nation's GDP because of the visionary policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Shah said at the 'Ground Breaking Ceremony' of cancer hospitals here on Monday. He added, "The bhumi puja (foundation laying ceremony) of 19 cancer hospitals itself is a big stride for the region after Independence."

Civil society groups in Nagaland on Monday held a demonstration in Kohima and started a signature campaign cross the state demanding that the incumbent director general of state police is retained. The issue of 1992 batch Nagaland-cadre IPS officer Rupin Sharma (51) continuing as the DGP became a bone of contention between the government and civil society groups ever since chief minister Neiphiu Rio, deputy CM Y Patton and chief secretary Temjen Toy wrote letters to home minister Rajnath Singh in March seeking Sharma’s replacement.

Mumbai, June 17 (PTI): Improved infrastructure and air connectivity are drawing a large number of tourists to India’s North-east and looking at the current traction, footfalls in the picturesque region are expected to grow by 10-12 per cent in 2019, industry experts said.

The bookings for North-east have gone up by 18 per cent as compared to the same period (April-June) last year. Tourism in the North-east region is expected to grow by at least 10-12 per cent even in the next year,” Cox & Kings head, relationships, Karan Anand, told PTI here.

According to an unofficial report, four Assam Rifflers personnel were killed during a shootout with suspected UGs today at Aboi under Mon district, Nagaland

What seems to be a Changlangshu type of attack, Assam Riffles were reportedly ambushed while they were on their way to the river to fetch water.

As reported by some locals, sounds of bomb and guns continued for about half an hour now. Reinforcements of Indian armies have been deployed and are seen moving towards the site. Nagaland Police have also rushed to the spot.

Guwahati, June 16  (PTI): Assam government today announced 19 cancer care centres, to be set up across the state in partnership with Tata Trusts at an investment of Rs 1,910 crore, will start functioning from mid-2020.

The government will lay the foundation stone of the proposed centres at a function on June 18 in presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP President Amit Shah and Tata Trusts Chairman Ratan Tata.

“We have reached the stage now to lay the foundation stone and conduct ‘Bhumi Pujan’, which will be done on Monday. After that, all the hospitals will be operational tentatively within next two years,” Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at a press conference here.

Agartala, June 16: A local noticed something unusual while walking along the train tracks inside the Atharamura Hill Range which is around 5/6 kms away from the Ambasa Station in Tripura. He spotted that a portion of the land near the track had caved in, probably damaged by floodwaters and not knowing what else to do, he waited there for a train to arrive, so that he can bring the damage to their notice.

The man, a resident of a nearby village, waited for two hours at that spot on Friday evening and finally he saw a train approaching. Not caring about the risks involved, the man began waving his rugged clothes and running towards the approaching train.

Kolkata, June 15 (IANS) A total of 430 persons have so far been evacuated from flood-affected areas of Manipur and more than 950 rescued in Tripura by Assam Rifles and Army personnel, a defence statement said here on.

“So far, a total of 430 citizens have been evacuated from Irong, Maibam, Uchiwa, Arapati, Kiyamgei, Achanbigai and Mongjam villages of Thoubal, Imphal East and Imphal West Districts of Manipur by columns of Assam Rifles and Indian Army with operations still on,” it said.

More than 950 have been rescued from Kailashahar, Indiranagar, Fatikroy, Santail, Kumarghat in Tripura and as of now, more than 2,000 people are being sheltered at relief camps in the state’s Kailashahar.

Guwahati/Udalguri, June 15: On Thursday night, a herd of at least 100 elephants destroyed 11 houses in Udalguri.

A local stated that the incident took place late at night when a herd of about 100 to 150 elephants entered their village in search of food. The elephants did not just enter but the herd even attacked some of the villagers and also destroyed a lot of houses.

The locals stated that they had to evacuate the village on that night just to save themselves from the jumbos.

Guwahati, June 16: The Kaziranga National Park (KNP) authorities have sought additional security cover following attacks on the security personnel by a mob on suspicion that they were child-lifters.

On June 6, the KNP’s Bagori forest range officer Pankaj Bora and three other forest officials were attacked by the panicky villagers at Mandu Bey who assumed that the personnel were child-lifters, as per reports.

A 38-year-old man, who is alleged to have raped his minor daughter last year, stabbed to death his wife at a court complex in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Friday, officials said. Purna Nahar Deka was arrested for the alleged rape after a case was registered last August at Joypur police station in the district. After spending nine months in jail, he got bail on June 6. He met his wife Rita Nahar Deka (33) in the district and sessions court in Dibrugarh for a hearing in the rape case on Friday.

Heavy rain and flooding in the last 48 hours have claimed the lives of nine people across Assam, Tripura and Manipur, disrupted train services and rendered thousands of people homeless.

In Tripura, three people lost their lives after being swept away by flood waters and one was killed in landslides. In Khowai district, strong currents swept away a farmer and the bodies of two others were found near the banks of the Manu
river in South Tripura district.
