Guwahati/Shillong, July 31: Soon after the complete draft of the National Register of Citizens was published, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has started to set up Infiltration Check Gates in various locations of Meghalaya to check for alleged infiltration by suspected illegal migrants who were excluded from the draft in Assam.
The KSU has also asked the people of Meghalaya to stay alert on the issue and report every possible person they see as suspected illegal migrants. The KSU is also checking the documents of almost every person from Assam who enters Meghalaya by road.
In a statement issued on Monday, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah stated that there is a need to have an effective mechanism and asked security personnel to remain vigilant in the checkpoints so that they can constantly check the entry of the illegal immigrants into the state from various parts of Assam.
However, according to people who regularly travel to or through Meghalaya from Assam are facing a lot of inconvenience because of this step by the KSU.
Speaking on the issue, North Karimganj’s MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha stated that this is actually a harassment to the people as the students’ union is asking the people for documents related to the NRC. He added that is is not possible for a person to carry the NRC documents all the time.~Time8
