IMPHAL | Aug 4 : Prof. W. Vishwanath, who would be acting as the vice-chancellor of Manipur University for 30 days with Pandey on leave, has reportedly declined accepting the charge.
It will be the first in the history that a university will be without a vice-chancellor or vice-chancellor in-charge for weeks, said MUSA general secretary Sanjukumar.
Thiyam Bharat, an economist said the strike will not be suspended until the vice-chancellor Pandey is removed from the post.
It is unfortunate that the notification of appointing professor W. Vishwanath as acting vice-chancellor of Manipur University was issued by registrar in-charge M. Shyamkesho Singh, he added.
“If the allegation that Manipur university is a hub for insurgents, they why the National Science Congress was held at Manipur University,” asked Bharat.
The Registrar-in-charge as authorised by HRD ministry issued an order on Thursday to grant leave to Pandey for 30 days from August 2. The order said that the senior most professor Vishwanath will perform as acting vice-chancellor.
Chief minister, N. Biren Singh on August 2 appealed to the varsity community to call off agitation so that the academic atmosphere can be retained and the fact-finding committee’s enquiry can investigate and perform their duties smoothly.
Biren said the HRD ministry gave its direction to grant leave for Professor Adya Prasad Pandey, for a period of 30 days. During his leave, the senior most professor of the university, Prof. W. Vishwanath Singh shall perform the duties of the vice-chancellor.
