‘Rename Taj Mahal as Ram Mahal or Krishna Mahal’: BJP MLA Surendra Singh’s yet another controversial remark

New Delhi: Controversial BJP MLA Surendra Singh is back with another contentious statement, this time pertaining to the Taj Mahal, one of the most popular historical monuments in the country as well as one of the ‘seven wonders’ of the world. As per the Bharatiya Janata Party leader, who represents Balia constituency from Uttar Pradesh, names of roads, monuments and memorials built by Muslim rulers in India should be changed.

With that logic in mind, Singh reportedly suggested that the Taj Mahal should be renamed to ‘Ram Mahal’  or ‘Krishna Mahal, or as per his own preference, ‘ Rashtrabhakt Mahal’. He even reportedly proposed the idea that the Victoria Palace in Kolkata should be renamed ‘Janki Palace’. Speaking to reporters, Singh reasoned that monuments built by Muslim rulers should not be razed down as they were built using resources available in India.

He said, “They should not be destroyed. Someone has erected buildings, using our land's resources, that belongs to India. Someone used India's resources and the construction worker's name would be there.... that's not a good thing. “However, he added that the names of such monuments should be changed. He further said, “Taj Mahal's name, we'll make it Ram Mahal, or Krishna Mahal, what's in that. If I am to be heard it should be called 'Rashtrabhakt Mahal'”

This is not the first time that the BJP leader has made questionable statements. Just a few days ago, Singh had urged his supporters to punch and thrash government officials with shoes if they demand bribes. He had made the statement as he was enraged at the staff at Bairia tehsil office for allegedly demanding a bribe, news agency PTI reported.

Meanwhile, Taj Mahal has also witnessed several controversies centred on it. In February this year,  BJP MP Vinay Katiya had stated that the historical monument should be “razed down” as it was a “blot on the Indian culture” . He had also claimed that the famous mausoleum in Agra was actually a Hindu temple, called ‘Tejo Mahal’ .  “It was our temple. Now it has become a cremation ground. A time will come when the cremation ground inside the Taj will be destroyed by some administrator. Only our temple will exist and only the pillars that exist around it will stand,” Katiyar had stated.

Prior to that, Katiyar and Singh’s party colleague, Sangeet Som had also alleged that the monument was built by “traitors” and that it cannot be a part of the Indian history.
