Students attempt to storm residence of Yugindro, one injured in police action

IMPHAL | Oct 6 : Demanding the withdrawal of the FIR and release of the arrested teachers and students of Manipur University, a huge number of students who are members of six various students tried to storm the residence of new pro vice chancellor, K. Yugindro today. One student received injuries during police action but he is said to be out of danger.

It may be mentioned that under the FIR lodged by new pro vice chancellor, altogether 13 students and teachers have been sent to jail after the surgical strike on September 20.

The agitators about 70 in numbers came in on diesel passenger autos and tried to storm into the residence of Yugindro located near Wangkhei Puja Ground. Police personnel who were already present there tried to block the agitators as there are restrictions with the order imposed by superintendent of police Imphal East.

After about 30 minutes of confrontation between police and agitators, tensions began to rise between the two parties. To control the situation, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells. During police action one agitator, Akoijam Birjit,19, son of A. Babudhon of Nongpok Senjembam, Imphal East was hit by tear gas shell into his chest. After the shell hit Birjit, he fainted on the ground and fell unconscious.

He was immediately rushed at Advance Hospital for medical treatment. He regained consciousness at about 6 pm and doctor said he is out of danger.

Speaking to media persons, one of the members of six students’ bodies, Somorjit Mayengbam said they came to meet professor, Yugindro to demand for the withdrawal of the FIR launched against university community and for immediate release of the students and teachers arrested under the FIR.

He said the prevailing issue at Manipur University has crossed 100 days and still no amicable solution has been brought to solve it. The issue is one of the worst cases in the whole world and students condemn lodging of FIR against students and teachers by a head of an institute, he claimed.

Students demand for bringing an amicable solution to the issue, any sort of security forces must be withdrawn from the campus immediately. He further said the enquiry against vice chancellor, A.P. Pandey must be completed immediately to withdraw Pandey from the post of vice chancellor.

It may be mentioned that various forms of agitations were demonstrated recently against the lodge of FIR and arrest of students and teacher.
