Students burn CM’s effigy, clash with police

IMPHAL | Sept 26 : Students of DM College of Science and Arts today burnt down effigy of chief minister, N. Biren inside their college campus decrying the arrest of students and teachers over the Manipur University crisis.

Two students of DM College of Arts were picked up by police during the first attempt to burn the effigy of the chief minister in front of the DM College West gate.

Subsequently, confrontation took place between students and security personnel. Stones were pelted from the side of the student protesters and police retaliated by firing several rounds of tear gas shells and stun bombs. Al last, the police were able to take control of the situation.

However, there are no reports of any injuries during the clash that lasted for more than three hours.

What is the ideology behind arresting the students and teachers and also the surgical strike inside the hostels of the mother institute of the state during the intervening mid-night of September 20 and 21, questioned a student protester.

It is very unfortunate that the chief minister is taking up violent actions against the students by standing in favor of A.P. Pandey, added the student.

He added, “In media, the chief minister stated ‘Any issue can be resolved through dialogue’ but in reality he is trying to resolve the Manipur University crisis by implementing the government’s dictatorial ideology.”

“Arresting innocent students and teachers will not bring any solution or be able to suppress the movement against Pandey. Now, the issue has become a state issue,” added the student.

The student protesters demand unconditional release of the students and teachers who were arrested in connection with the ongoing university’s crisis which resulted in the aftermath of pro vice-chancellor, K. Yugindro visit to the university campus to overtake the charge of the vice-chancellor on September 20.

Slogan such as ‘CM should resign from his post’, ‘we condemn police action’, ‘we condemn excessive police brutality’ were shouted by the protesters.

General secretary of DM College of Arts, Rohenjit Kangujam said conducting raid at the hostel of Manipur University and arresting of teachers and students of the varsity is a big challenge to the teachers and students community.

He said police further continued to arrest students of different colleges for demanding unconditional release of the students and teachers of the university.

“Such violent and inhuman act of police against the students and teacher community is not tolerable. Such acts should be stopped immediately,” he asserted.

The students cautioned of intensifying the agitations if the government fails to release all the students and teachers who were arrested in connection with the university issue.

Earlier, the students of DM College of Arts demonstrate a rally at DM College road, Imphal.
