UKHRUL | Aug 8 : Ukhrul Autonomous District Council (UADC) administrative staffs including the teaching community organised a three-day extensive cleanliness drive in Ukhrul town as a part of Swachh Survekshan Grameen observances.
Chief executive officer, ADC-Ukhrul, Polly Makan informed that the main objective of the cleanliness drive in the district headquarter is to motivate and get people accustomed with the mind-set of a clean environment and healthy way of life for the wellbeing of the society.
Polly further said that the Small Town Committee (STC) was set up to maintain the sanitation of Ukhrul town. With rapid increase in population, the volume of waste garbage has also increased tremendously and its disposal has become a big challenge, she added.
At present, ADC Small Town Committee is using three Tata tipper trucks for collection of waste regularly. However, due to shortage in manpower and vehicles it could not completely collect the waste garbage from all corners of Ukhrul town. Polly lamented that unless the state government provide special assistance to ADC Ukhrul, they will not be in the position to purchase additional truck or employ extra labourers.
Waste disposal has become a challenge and the residents of the town needs awareness on solid waste management and get involved personally for keeping the surrounding clean, she added while urging the town folks to make use of the thrash-bin installed on the side of the road.
She further informed that the cleanliness drive was officially announced for two days; however it was further extended for another additional day. The drive started from District Hospital and concluded at Kharasom Junction, a stretch of about 6 kilometres, said Polly.
The CEO of ADC-Ukhrul also informed that over 150 staffs participated in the cleanliness drive and were divided into five groups. She said that a similar notice has been served to all the schools under ADC Ukhrul to carry out cleanliness drives. It is the duty of every individual to keep their surrounding clean including market places, schools, public convenience, worship places and office premises, she added.
