Guwahati, August 6: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has landed in a soup by terming Naga Tribal headgear as ‘outlandish’ at a seminar held at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club on Monday.
“Why does our Prime Minister, who wears all sorts of outlandish headgear wherever he goes around the country, refuse to wear a Muslim skullcap?” Tharoor said during his address at the event.
In his address, the Congress leader said PM Modi was seen in “hilarious Naga headdress, feathers, and various kinds of extraordinary outfits then why does he refuse to wear the green?”
The Official Twitter account of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was quick to point out his faux pas with a tweet stating “Shashi Tharoor mocks people of Northeast by claiming their dressing style is ‘outlandish’.”
This post was followed by a number of BJP leaders and ministers posting against the Congress leader’s statement, including MoS Home Kiren Rijiju who has demanded an apology from the Congress MP.
“I demand an apology from the Congress Party for insulting the people of India’s North East & Tribals. Shashi Tharoor described North-East people & Naga Tribal headgears as funny looking outlandish & hilarious”, Rijiju tweeted.
Apart from Rijiju, Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore also slammed Tharoor for his remarks.
To this, Tharoor came up with a justification saying that he was referring to the ceremonial headdress offered to the visiting dignitaries and not daily wear. “Dear Rajyavardhan, you know better: I was obviously referring to the ceremonial headdress offered to the visiting dignitaries, not daily wear. But you’re sidestepping the point”, Tharoor tweeted.
Meanwhile, twitterati have begun trolling the Congress Leader and reactions are pouring in from all corners of the country over his comment.
The seminar was reportedly organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Development Studies, run by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
