We stand firm by resolution to oppose Citizenship (Amendment) Bill: Meghalaya CM

SHILLONG | Jan 07, 2019:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said that the Cabinet had already come out with an official resolution to oppose the move by the BJP led NDA to bring an amendment to the Citizenship Bill.

“There is no confusion about our stand on this issue. We were the first Government to come out with an official resolution within the Cabinet to oppose the propose Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016,” Chief Minister told reporters here today.

He added that there should not be any kind of ambiguity and confusion among the people or North East Student Organisation (NESO) about the stand of the Government.

On the steps taken by the Government to pressurize the Centre in this regard, the Chief Minister said that the Cabinet has passed the resolution to oppose the move of the BJP led NDA Government and this is the most aggressive stand that the State Government has taken.

“The only Government which has been pro-active is the Meghalaya Government,” Conrad said.

Responding to a query if the NPP would pull out from the NDA, he said that they have made very clear before the NDA Government that this is something which they are not going to support.

“We would see on our next steps when the situation comes,” Chief Minister.

On demand of a section of the NGOs to drop BJP Minister, AL Hek from the MDA led Government, Conrad said that this is the same cabinet Minister who supported the resolution of the Cabinet to reject the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

“He may a member of the BJP, but in the Cabinet, he had clearly stated that the protection of his people and his State is the priority. The NGOs should be happy despite being a member of the party, he put the issues affecting the people and the State in-front,” Chief Minister.

When asked about the bandh call by the NESO on Jan 8, he said that the Government has nothing to say since it is NESO who has called the bandh.

It may be mentioned that state government has issued a strict warning to employees to attend work tomorrow on the observation of the Northeast bandh and threatened actions against all absentees.
