Women organisations condemn police raid at MU, support 48 hours general strike

IMPHAL | Sept 25 : President of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Ph. Sakhi, president of Nupi Samaj, Th. Ramani, vice president of AMKIL, L. (O) Nganbi, president of All Manipur Tamme Chingmi Apunba Lup, Momon Leima jointly condemned the raid at Manipur University which occurred during the intervening night of September 20 and 21, women organisations will support 48 hours general strike called by six various organisation.

Speaking to media persons during a joint press conference held today at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul.

Nganbi alleged that the issue of Manipur University started due to the undutiful vice chancellor of Manipur University, Adya Prasad Pandey. He was appointed as VC of the university with an agenda of Central government to suppress the rights of Manipur people.

MOA was signed on August 16 between Manipur University community and state government under the instruction of ministry of human resource in order to solve the issue. But instead of following the agreement, the state government deployed police personnel and para-military forces during the intervening night of September 20 and 21, she added.

The students of Manipur University are of a higher level of studies and the police should have consulted the warden to conduct the operation, she added. And she was informed by one of the hosteller that the clash occurred when police personnel reportedly tried to frame charges by allegedly keeping guns and some written documents inside the premises of hostellers.

Every issue of the state should be settled by the chief minister, N. Biren but instead of solving the issues the government is taking the consent of Central government, she alleged.

To bring development, education should be promoted but the government is wrongly interpreting the development into politics, she added.

Nganbi said women’s organisation made the decision to get involved in the issue of Manipur University when they realised that the midnight raid was conducted against students of the university while they were preparing for semester examination.

Women’s organisation will intensify their agitation if the government fails to solve the issue immediately. The women organisations will support the upcoming 48 hours general strike called by six various students’ organisation demanding the unconditional release the arrested students and teachers of Manipur University and to bring back normalcy for the welfare of the students, Nganbi added.

President of AMKIL, Sakhi condemned the heinous act of police personnel for allegedly teasing the lady hostellers. She said the awkward nature of police personnel have made the ladies hosteller insecure. She was reported by one of the ladies hosteller that police personnel allegedly teased them when they came out of the hostel to buy essential commodities. The hostellers are not even allowed to get out from the campus to buy foods. She was also reported that the hostellers are banned to take food from their respective kitchen, and it has come to a situation that food are being shared from the other hostel’s kitchen, even some of them are starving due to the restriction of police forces.

She urged the government to solve the issue immediately to bring normalcy in the Manipur University.
