Guwahati, September 7: The convicted Zakir Hussain (19), who was the prime accused in the gang rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Nagaon in March, was awarded death penalty on Friday.
Nagaon Chief Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday convicted Zakir and acquitted five others for lack of evidence. Two other accused in the case were minors and they were being tried in juvenile court.
It may be mentioned that the minor girl was gang-raped and set on fire when she was alone at home in Dhaniabheti Lalung Gaon in Nagaon on March 23. The Class V student was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital but she succumbed to her injuries.
A case was filed in the Batadrava Police Station. The charge sheet was filed on April 28 against Zakir and seven others.
He has been charged of rape, house trespass, causing disappearance of evidence and murder under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Under Section 448 of the IPC, Zakir has been sentenced with one year jail, under Section 201 of the IPC three years jail and Rs 5000 fine, under POCSO Act life imprisonment and under Section 302 of the IPC, he has been awarded death penalty.
