IMPHAL | Jul 1: Locals of Nagaram headed by Nagaram Women Society (Meira Paibi) staged a sit in protest at Nagaram today, condemning the incident in which three men were allegedly assaulted by a head constable near Little Clinic Nagaram on June 27.
The women society demands immediate termination of the police personnel head constable, T. A Meitei reportedly involved in the crime in order to avoid the repetition of such unlawful intimidation to random people
Speaking to IFP, Peter Kapai, one among the three persons who were assaulted, said that he went to a hotel nearby to buy rice for himself, his dog and two of his friends who were visiting him. After reaching the hotel there were two police personnel in the hotel and the misunderstanding arose when he said his dog was in the hotel, said Peter.
Peter said the police personnel misunderstood him, thinking he was labeling and taunting them as dogs.
An altercation resulted and when his brother Kenedy Kapai tried to intervene, the policeman struck him with the butt of his gun, besides slapping him.
After this the policemen too the three of them in a private car to Chingmeirong Police station for about an hour.
They were later released after Peter Kapai made some phone calls to the locals to intervene and help.
A release form Nagaram Women Society stated that the act is an intimidation of civilians at gunpoint without any provocation and further mentioned that it is unbecoming of the police who are supposedly meant to safeguard the security and life of the citizens.
It also mentioned that the incident exhibits a racist attitude towards a particular community and shows disregard for women society of the locality and it has created a fear psychosis among the people in the locality.
