Nagas are not children of Ram

The manipulations of our origin that is clearly being attempted by Hidutva is the declaration that “The Christians in India are children of Ram,” by Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries. She, a BJP MP of Fatehpur (UP) adopted deceptive tactics in her attempt to misinterpret the identity of non-Hindus including Nagas. Nagas belong to the Mongolian race and have nothing to do with Ram historically, religiously or in any other way. The so-called Ghar Wapsi or “homecoming” conversion melas or uniform civil codes do not arise in the case of Nagas, including Gaidinliu’s Heraka.

Her statement is aimed at reviving the unsound idealism of the four varnas of her party’s One Book, One Religion, One Language and One Culture. To manipulate and include other non- Hindus, such as Nagas, to become children of Ram, and a low caste community under the most hated caste system to gain at their finger tips control over our people as Dalits is highly unacceptable. The practice of caste is a necessary factor of the four varnas as understood by them under Hinduism.

Naturally the BJP Govt’s offer for “sharing of the Sovereignty with India,” to the Nagas to let them accept the constitution of India appears to be one of their top priorities. As such, Mr R N Ravi, the interlocutor for G o I has repeatedly offered the same. One should not be confused with “sharing of Sovereignty” as that of “shared Sovereignty;” they are greatly different from each other. When two sovereign nations mutually agree upon certain terms and conditions in their constitutions, that, is a “shared Sovereignty” between them. New Zealand and Island of Niue are the only example. Independence shall have to come first in order to have “shared Sovereignty”, without prior independence there can be no “shared Sovereignty”

It speaks the importance to remain firm on the stand taken by our forefathers under the aegis of the Naga Club, with the Simon Commission of 1929 for sovereignty and the plebiscite of 1951 reaffirming the same. “Nagas are not Indians; and their territory is not a part of the Indian Union” declared Khrisanisa Seyie, First President, FGN. “No solution without sovereignty and integration” declared NSCN IM Ato Kilonser Th Muivah on 14.08.2015. “No talk without sovereignty” President NNC Addino Phizo confirmed the rejection of the Indian constitution and children of Ram.

Shillong Accord of 1975 signed by the Representatives of Underground Organisations (RUO), were some amongst the veterans of the Naga struggle conducted by NNC and FGN. The vast majority of the Nagas immediately reacted against it as the discussion of the Accord was to take place within the Indian constitution that had already been accepted in the Accord under the duress. The public call for rejection of the Accord thus started as soon as it was brought to Nagaland. No discussion ever took place between Delhi and the RUO signatories as the same was rejected. The sad reality was that too many of their leaders and followers were assassinated for the Accord, condemning them as traitors who sold out their sovereignty. This should never ever be repeated. It is a clear proof that the four varnas or caste system has no room in the Naga society.

Among others, the proposal of renaming Dimapur Airport after Gaidinliu by a BJP MP from Odisha in Parliament Session in the past seems to be a move in the same direction to percolate Hinduism into the Naga society, since they consider Gaidinliu’s Heraka as a branch of their Hinduism. The BJP with its outfits such as RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal has been making all sorts of forceful attempts to abolish the secular credentials of India down the ages. It has partially succeeded with Modi at the helm in New Delhi but a politically, culturally and religiously worked out Hindutva monolith cannot last. India will pay a very heavy price for the attempt BJP is seemingly set to make.

It is not understood as to why some of our Naga politicians talk of an honourable Naga political settlement and at the same time induce the BJP and its outfits to control Naga politics with Hinduization. We have witnessed a certain section of Naga public shouting on top of their hearts praising “Jai Mata Di Jai” as well as “Jai Jisu Ji Jai” in public places. Worshiping the Hindu mother goddess manifested as Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati just for political mileage or money, trying to confuse the Nagas is unacceptable.

The Hindu Kingdom had to be ruled by the Moghul dynasties and the British for over 800 years. Caste system is responsible for this sad history. Hinduism with its much hated notorious track record of caste is a curse. A case in point is the snobbery of high caste towards Dalits who are their own brothers - treated as being lower than their dogs. This insanity does not go together with the nationalist spirit of patriotism or dignity. The severe social drawbacks produced by the caste system explain why 665 million poor Indians cannot afford lavatories till date and are compelled to defecate in the open. India is known for the abject poverty, ignorance, lack of civic sense or social ethics and disease-breeding unhygienic living conditions of her poor people.

As such, she is despised and segregated randomly by other civilised countries since hundreds of years of such slavery present even today. Mahatma Gandhi was strongly committed against the evils of the caste system and he tragically ended up being its victim. A BJP MP’s glorification of his assassin, Nathuram Godse, or the installation of many statues in honour of Godse, is an ugly reflection of the philosophy and doctrine of life advocated by the BJP, RSS, VHP or Bajrang Dal. That followed the dirty politics of defacing the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Ambedkar took place recently. Does this lawlessness explain the 500% increase in rape cases?

The situation reminds one of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s statement with a broken heart, that “to become human they have to quit Hinduism” and he said, “I was born a Hindu, I had no choice. I will not die a Hindu because I do have a choice.” For him, the Hindus are as good or as bad as any other people on earth, but they practise caste and untouchability because it is a part of their religion and they had no choice. Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s BJP of religious tolerance is healthy for the Hindus as well as other religious communities but Modi’s BJP is different.

We must see where the position of the Nagas would be in the future Hindu Rastra and the sharing sovereignty offer link with children of Ram, the BJP is clearly committed to bring about. A Brahmin tailor was doing alteration of my trousers thinking that I was from Japan. But when I told him of my Naga identity, he threw my trousers out into the street in Pune in 1982. I took a legal battle with him. Several RSS youth constantly threatened me with dire consequences for a long time. They broke most of my window panes at Symbiosis International Hostel, trying to force me to withdraw the case, compelling me to arm myself with an iron rod concealed in a leather cover and a helmet to be ready for 7 into 4 to accept their wild challenge to fight them physically.

I received the strong support from the Naga - Maharastrian Association Pune and a whole hearted support from a Brahmin Rtd Army Colonel R N Rege during this time of crisis. He went all out to help me. Justice was delivered as there was secular character in the country at that time. As such, caste and other discriminations could be effectively challenged. Had our Naga Club accepted Ram to be their father instead of Simon Commission and Plebiscite, the situation would have been completely different. Similarly, one must think twice for the GenNext.

The different BJP and Hindutva outfits committed to extremism may not burn us to death in our Nagaland as was done to the believers in main land India, including Graham Staines and his two sons because the extremists did not like the anti – leprosy Christian mission of mercy the Staines were serving. But they will try to distort our origin, political history and priceless Christian identity by the excessive use of money for inducement, manipulation of power and unscrupulous interpretation of history and culture to achieve their mission of four varnas through our power greedy politicians. However, these oppressive measures that the resurgent RSS brand of Hinduism has started to launch for conversion will not be able to weaken our stand. Rather it will help us move forward ever stronger.

The outfits of BJP are not our enemy, they are our good neighbours. We are not fighting against the sinners but only against the sins. We must love them dearly with our whole hearts. This is a spiritual breathing, lets reason together for a peaceful future. We ourselves are our own worst enemy; our downfall lies in our own immoral ways of doing things to solve our problems. This has resulted in rampant corruption, fratricides, extortions, short-cut methods to achieve power and abuse of power as is witnessed today. We need not be terrified by what they may do to fulfil their plans, if our lives demonstrate integrity and character worthy of respect.

This refers to my short speech at the 5th June 2018 consultative meeting of Working Committee (WC) NNPGs with Nagaland Tribal Reps & GBs at Hotel Saramati, Dmr.
