IMPHAL | Jan 31: Union Home minister, Rajnath Singh today assured that the Centre will take up necessary steps so that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will not hurt the sentiments of the northeast people.

His assurance was given to an all political parties team from the State that visited him and served a memorandum calling for withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Rajnath further assured that the bill will not affect the norhteast states and he will personally look into the matter, to the team of all political parties of the state led by chief minister, N. Biren.

The memorandum submitted to the Union Home minister calls for withdrawal of the bill and to insert a clause for the protection of the indigenous people of North East region in general and the state of Manipur in particular.

It also mentioned the details about the all political parties meet in the State on last Monday and the prevailing situation of the State after the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha sitting on January 7.

The memorandum further mentioned that while it welcome the clarification issued by the ministry of Home Affairs that a final decision to grant citizenship to the migrants would rest with the concerned State government, it would only be appropriate and add strength to the above clarification is such a separate safeguard or exception clause ‘for the protection of indigenous people of northeast region in general and the state of Manipur in particular’ is incorporated in the current bill.

This would put an end to the growing uncertainty and doubt prevailing in the mind of the people of northeast in general and Manipur in particular, it added.

The team also informed that if the above clause is not incorporated in the existing bill in the form of an amendment, the people of Manipur and northeast states feared that the demographic balance as existing now will be seriously affected.

It urged for incorporating a safeguarding clause for the protection of the indigenous people of northeast region, particularly Manipur so that when the bill becomes an Act, the region is not affected.
